Getting the most from your test data

A large amount of teacher time is devoted to assessment. Assessment is a broad term, meaning any activity in which data is collected from learners to make judgments about their proficiency or progress. It includes both informal classroom quizzes, peer- and self-assessment and more formal standardized testing for certification or decision-making. In classroom contexts, Tests are usually constructed and provided by teachers themselves, or may be provided by education companies such as Oxford University Press as part of a course offering. In either case, it is important for teachers to know what to do with the information the assessment provides.
The purpose of this session is to introduce teachers to the kinds of data we get from language tests used in the language classroom. We will discuss the kinds of analysis that can be performed on the data, and the kinds of decisions that can be made using that data. Having a good knowledge of what the data means is beneficial for both teachers and learners. We will therefore discuss how this data can be used as part of assessment for learning, i.e. how teachers can embed assessment into classroom activities to enhance learning opportunities, as well as the importance of assessment data literacy for language teachers.
