For Adult teachers

Motivating communicative activities​​​
This session will focus on the key element of a successful communicative activity when working with adults, and that is learner motivation. We will look at some activities that place a strong emphasis on learner agency and meaningful interaction – important in both motivating your adult students to speak and in achieving deeper learning. In the second part of the talk we will show how these key elements can also be applied in online classrooms by examining different engaging activities using


Edna Rutkowski is a Brazilian-based teacher tutor with over twenty years' experience in pre-primary and primary education. She has taught in international schools, language courses and developed programs to support teachers’ classroom performance. She holds a Master of Education - Professional Development for Educators, a postgraduate degree in School Administration, a BA in English and Literature, and a second BA in Pedagogy. Edna presents regularly on how to adapt teaching techniques to make lessons more interactive. Currently, she works as a Professional Development Consultant at Oxford University Press (OUP). She is also a researcher in the School of Education at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP/Brazil) and a member of the Study Group in Research and Continuing Teacher Education (GEPEC/Brazil).

Paul Woodfall, B.A (Hons), Dip.Tefla, Dip Ed. Man., is OUP’s Regional Training Co-ordinator for Middle East and Central Asia. He has given training workshops from K1 -12, and trained English Faculty at universities in several different countries around the world including: Spain, UAE, KSA, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the Sultanate of Oman. He has lived and worked in the region for over 20 years. Before joining OUP in 2011, Paul was ICT Co-ordinator, Team Leader for CELA exams, an IELTS examiner for 9 years (IELTS examiner trainer for six of those years) as well as teacher and teacher trainer based at the British Council in UAE. Specifically interested in “learning by doing”, his main goal is to promote a greater understanding of student-centred, enquiry-based learning approaches, with the overall aim of encouraging critical thinking and the development of good study skills at all levels during the educational process.

Christopher Sheen is a full-time Teacher Trainer and Professional Development Coordinator with Oxford University Press, based in Istanbul. For nearly twenty-five years he has engaged all types of learner profiles in the ELT field, in North/South America, Asia, Europe, Africa, and since 2014 in Turkey. Before joining OUP Turkey he was the lead trainer in the corporate sales division of Japan’s largest language company as well as being a full-time English instructor in several departments in the largest university in western Japan. He has a keen interest in classroom dynamics, student ownership of the learning process, and in particular innovative Continuing Professional Development programs that are customizable for both teachers and institutions alike. In addition to his own continuing education in ELT, he believes perhaps his strongest asset is the hundreds of hours he has spent in coaching programs and workshops working directly with thousands of teachers from all over the world.

Montse Costafreda is a teacher trainer with Oxford University Press based in Barcelona, Spain. She has many years’ experience working in ELT as a teacher, teacher trainer, and Head of Studies. At present she is heavily involved in professional development programmes for teachers and educators, both online and face-to-face. She is particularly interested in the implementation of innovative methodologies and techniques in the classroom, like Flipped Learning and Project-Based Learning.

Neil Ainsworth has been involved in ELT since 2003, working as a teacher, teacher trainer, and director of studies. He has taught in Australia, Ireland and Spain, and is especially interested in bilingual education, pronunciation, and learning technology. Recently, he has become involved in the world of Flipped Learning and is heavily involved in researching and creating content for OUP Spain’s professional development courses.

Terrie Craddock has been a teacher trainer, academic manager and English language teacher for over 20 years, all around the world. Terrie has written and delivered many teacher training workshops online, face to face and blended. Her training focuses on providing practical ideas and tips that teachers can use every day. Terrie is currently working as a teacher trainer for OUP in Saudi Arabia where she organises training events for outside speakers and delivers specialised training programmes for schools and universities. She has written a variety of bespoke training programmes and is a consultant for syllabus design. She has also assisted universities and schools in designing continued professional development programmes. Terrie is DELTA qualified and has an Masters in teaching English to Young Learners.
